Demolish the Misgivings

The dividing wall would have affected and would in future affect the everyday emotional life of human beings, especially the innocent children on both sides. And why should we be so militantly apart from one another? Should one's loyalties to caste, creed and religion be so strong? Should one's apprehensions and misgivings be so relentless? These questions would rush into the mind of anyone who has any sensitivity left.

It is unfortunate that even the demolition of a small portion of the twenty-year old wall had to wait so long. Several Dalit outfits, Left parties and right-thinking individuals had been demanding it for quite a long time. The demolition would provide a pathway to members of the Scheduled Caste community living close by. The 600 metre dividing wall was built by the dominant community around their colony at Uthapuram village, just to prevent entry of Dalits.

The community, which is classified as Most Backward, had threatened to launch an agitation if the government demolished the wall. Three hundred members of the community had surrendered their ration cards to the DRO in protest against plans to demolish the wall.

As the Chief Minister has told the Assembly, it is the duty of society to ensure total harmony. With this in view, he wanted the District Collector to provide pathway to one community and protection to the other. The pathway can be used by both the communities. Let them live a life of fraternity, the CM has extolled.

Already the wall has divided generations. Let's put an end to it. Let's us demolish all that divides.
