There
is some good news for commuters of Chennai. First, soon Chennai would have
multi-transport systems, including Metro Rail, suburban train service, Mass
Rapid Transport system, (MRTS) and an integrated city bus transport system.
The construction work of the Rs 14,600 crore 45 km Chennai Metro Rail
project began yesterday. The piling work for the construction of first phase
elevated viaduct from Koyambedu to Ashok Nagar has already started. The
entire project is expected to be completed in six years, that is, by 2015.

The phase-I of the Chennai Metro Rail Project consists of two corridors
with a combined length of 45 kms. Corridor-1 with a length of 23.1 kms (14.3
km underground and 8.8 km elevated) would run from Washermeanpet to Airport
via Anna Salai. Corridor-II, with a length of 22 kms (9.7 kms underground
and 12.3 km elevated) would run from Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount via
Koyambedu.
And so, we will have several options for our city travel. This will
certainly reduce congestion on our narrow roads. However, during the
construction of the Metro-Rail, we may have to temporarily put up with a lot
of inconvenience. Let’s be prepared to suffer today for a happier tomorrow.
The second good news is, we can be assured that a ‘genuine’ engine driver
is operating our train. Yes, biometric technology would soon replace the
conventional method of using keys to operate electric trains. The driver's
thumb impression would be taken as biometric identification. This was stated
by our Minister of State for Railways E Ahamed in Chennai yesterday. For
those of us who have not yet forgotten the recent hijacking of an Electric
Multiple Unit train from the Central Railway Station , which killed four and
injured many, this comes as real relief. Doesn’t it?
And there is more. As part of security measures at railway stations, CCTV
cameras had been installed at Chennai Central Railway Station at a cost of
Rs five crore! Ah! That will ensure our safety.
