This is too small an award for Muthuvelar Karunanidhi and he should decline it.
Who can forget his first script for Jupiter Pictures’ Rajakumari? Or, for that matter, Parasakthi, Manohara, Malaikkallan, Kanchi Thalaivan, Marutha Naattu Ilavarasi, Rangoon Radha and recently 'Uliyin Osai?'
Karunanidhi is known for his knowledge in and contribution for Tamil literature. His contributions cover a wide area like poem, letters, screenplays, novels, biographies, historic novels, stage-plays, dialogues, songs etc. He has skillfully crafted Kuraloviam for ThiruValluvar’s Thirukkural, Tholkaappiya Poonga, Poombukar as well as many poems, essays and books. He is truly a profound literary genius.
Frankly, it was not with joy that I read the news that Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has bagged the best Dialogue Writer award for the film 'Uliyin Osai' as Tamil Nadu government yesterday announced top film awards for 2007 and 2008.
Karunanidhi was a well-known dialogue writer even before taking the plunge into politics, a trait the 86-year-old DMK patriarch has retained till date, with his penchant for classical Tamil dialogues.
Set in 1005 AD, 'Uliyin Osai' revolves around the quest of a king to find the right model for a beautiful sculpture to be installed at a proposed temple in Thanjavur and related incidents, with some twists and turns. The dialogue is superb, no doubt.
Films and politics are intertwined in Tamil Nadu, best exemplified by the almost demi-god status enjoyed by late M G Ramachandran, a former Chief Minister and founder of AIADMK, and Jayalalithaa, now spearheading the party and an actress of yesteryears who paired with him in many hits and like him, held the CM's post.
All said and done, I don’t think the Honourable Chief Minister should receive this award, instituted by the Tamil Nadu Government and recommended by a Committee appointed by the Government. Whatever is the rationale behind this recommendation, and even if it is reasonable and justifiable, the CM in his infinite wisdom should let some professional dialogue writer to receive this honour.
He should not accept anything less than the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema. And he should not aspire for anything less than a Bharath Ratna.
This is too small an award for Muthuvelar Karunanidhi and he should gracefully decline it.
