It is indeed heartening news that Chennai will have two more new City Corporations – one in South and another in North. The ever increasing population and the consequent problems including traffic congestion have necessitated the creation of two more Corporations. Presently, some parts of the neighbouring Tiruvellore and Kancheepuram Districts form part of the city. There are sixteen municipalities, twenty town panchayats and ten panchayats and 214 village panchayats within the Chennai Metro.
The CMDA had already submitted a second Master Plan, with a projection for the year 2026. A special committee has now recommended the creation of two additional Corporations for Chennai.
It is learnt that the new ones will be Tambaram and Ambattur. In the Northern Corporation, the Municipalities of Ambattur, Avadi, Madhavaram, Mnali, Poonthamalli, Thiruverkadu, Maduravoyal, Valasaravakkam, Kathivakkam and Tiruvotriyur, four town panchayats and 55 panchayats will be included/ In the Southern Corporation, the municipalities of Tambaram, Alandur, Ullagaram, Puzhuthivakkam, Pammal, Pallavaram, and Anakaputhur, thirteen town panchayats and 52 village panchayats will be attached.
There is little doubt that creation of more civic bodies in and around Chennai is long overdue. This move is necessary for improving the infrastructure, public services and generation of resources. Let’s welcome the new arrivals.
With these additions, Chennai will be more than twin-cities; it will be triple-cities.
