A flower show in Chennai during the peak summer time? Yes! Chennai is witnessing a flower show for the first time. Life Style Trade Fairs have organized Chennai Flower Show 2009 at the Y.M.C.A Grounds, Royapettah from May1st to May10th.

Featuring flowers from Ooty, Kodaikanal, Bangalore, Kerala, China, Holland and Switzerland, these flowers are definitely a must watch. Spread out spaciously in an air-conditioned hall, flowers here are changed every two days and are watered on a regular basis. Opens up Bhoopathy, Incharge of the flower arrangement, "Flowers like tulips, roses, chrysanthemums, nishantas, wax flowers, lilies are all here and a floriculturist S.Sunder from Ooty came all the way to Chennai to conceptualize the whole fair. It is a bit difficult to keep changing the whole set of flowers every two days, but I think it is worth the effort as the response here is very high."
Some of the main attractions here are the flower carvings done in shapes of the Taj Mahal, Dinosaur, India Map, Cup and Saucer, Teddy Bear and not to forget the beautiful vegetable carving which has carved animals, flowers made with brinjals, carrots, cabbage, cucumber making it a treat to watch. Says Divya, a college student, "This is the first time I 'am watching a flower show ever and I should say that it is simply superb. It is nice to see something like this in Chennai that too during this hot summer as it is full air-conditioned making the whole experience nice."
This Trade Fair not only has flowers but also ornamental fishes and consumer products for sale. Products like cutting knives, seeds, flowers, pots, gardening tools, coir ropes, fish tanks, fish foods can be found here at the fair which houses around 150 stalls. Opines Kumari, a housewife, "The whole fair is nice but the entry fee is very high. Rs.50 per person is quite on the higher side and they also charge Rs.100 for people having cameras. I think they should reduce the cost so that all classes of people can come and enjoy."
The effort taken is high and is commendable, but for so much of effort taken they could have added more carvings and shapes rather than just displaying the flowers. Flower Shows in Ooty happens at a big scale and people visiting this Chennai show with the same expectation, are left quite disappointed.
This Flower Show is definitely a summer treat for Chennaities and for all the flower lovers; many varieties of flowers are for sale. So make sure you grab those during this weekend!
