If there is any sport whose survival a sponsoring corporate company needs to keep its own business going, it is cycling.
TI Cycles, a leading cycle manufacturing company belonging to the Murugappa Group, has anounced the 'BSA Hercules Chennai Cycling', to mobilise support for the sport, besides increasing awareness about healthy living, sport and sustainable means of transport. The event is on February 26 at the Marina beach front along a distance of 8 km.
Mr. L Ramkumar, Managing Director, TI Cycles, Murugappa Group commented on Chennai Cycling 2012 saying ‘TI Cycles has always stood by fun, fitness and freedom by offering a range of bicycles and e scooters. ‘BSA HERCULES Chennai Cycling ‘12’ is going to be one of the biggest every cycling events conducted in South India and it feels great to support an institution like UWC”.
'We have naturally beautiful, pollution free places in Tamil Nadu to encourage the sport of cycling as well as a health and fitness activity. The Tamil Nadu government through SDATN would make efforts for the development of this sport also, Mr Rajkumar said. The amateur leg, which is also meant to be Green campaign against environmental pollution caused by motor vehicles, a prize money professional cycling sport event will also be organised.
120 cyclists in the men's and 50 in the women's sections will be vying for honours under the aupices of Cycling Federation of India and Tamil Nadu Cycling Association will participate in this event. In the amateur section comprising corporates and children, 5000 people are expected to participate to show their support for the healty habit of cycling. 'Our objective is to build India's India's largest cycling and Green movement', Mr Ramkumar said.
