National Photo Salon 2009 in the City

Photographic Society of Madras (PSM) conducts a national level photography competition annually titled National Photo Salon.  This year the 2nd edition was launched at the Lalit Kala Academi and was inaugurated by ace Film Director and revolutionary cinematographer Shri. Balu Mahendra.

There are 289 photographs on display, which were selected out of 2,400 entries.  This year's theme is 'Incredible India' under six categories namely Flora & Fauna, Streets at Night, Water, Emotions, Monochrome and Temples of India.  Apart from these, there is a section devoted to selected photographs of PSM members.  To mark the Madras week, there is an exhibit of rare photographs of Madras.

Inaugurating the function Balumahendra expressed his excitement to be part of the event. "I am inspired by all the photographs displayed in the exhibition and feel excited to be amidst my caste (photographers)." The ace director-Cinematographer added that his favorite theme is emotions, as it directly relates to people. .

On this Occasion Mr. K.O. Isaac, President, PSM said "The selection process was done through automated software and there could not be any favoritism.  The entries were judged by an eminent Panel of independent judges completely on merit basis." He noted that it was an arduous job for the judges to shortlist the finalists.

Dr. P. Srinivasan won the 1st prize in the category 'Flora and Fauna'. " Any light is good light for photography, just take the opportunity", says Srinivasan. He is right, he took the opportunity of shooting at 6.15pm capturing the beautiful scene in a sepia tone, which has won him the 1st prize. His 2 other photographs in Wild life category have got the honorary mention.

Srirama Santosh an artist cum photographer from Chennai has won 2nd prize for his photograph ' Oor Kavalar ' under ' Temples of India ' category.  The captivating aspect of this photograph is the perspective and the monochrome tone.  

Exhibition of award winning picture and those selected for display is open for 5 days until 23rd of August, 2009 between 11 am and 7 pm.
